Beer, wine, hot food and a light dessert will be available beginning at 5:30 pm. The discussion will begin promptly at 6 pm and conclude at 7 pm. Further socializing continues until 7:30 pm. As always, First Mondays is a ‘no homework’ event, an opportunity for WAF members to share our common interest in world affairs.
"Southeast Asia: Is the Democratic Glass Half Full or Half Empty?"
The past year has seen a wide range of disparate developments in Southeast Asia. Most recently, Joko Widodo, the first non-establishment President of Indonesia, won re-election over a former Suharto associate, Prabowo Subianto. "Jokowi" also affiliated himself with Islamists who call, among other things, for a wider role for Sharia in Indonesia. Elections in Thailand seemed again to support the populist movement started by the Shinawatra family, and the army is re-examining the results. Some months back, Mohamed Mahathir, the strong man of Malaysia who had engineered his succession by Najib Razak, ran against him, in league with Anwar Ibrahim, whom both had previously accused of sodomy, and won, denouncing the 1MDB fund malfeasance, itself allegedly abetted by Goldman Sachs. In Myanmar, the party of Aung San Suu Kyi, now in power, looks the other way as the Rohingya minority is ethnically cleansed. The US is militarily lining up with Vietnam, itself still a Communist dictatorship. The stories in Cambodia, Singapore, the Philippines, and probably Laos keep the question fully active -- is the democratic glass half full or half empty?
