Dinner Discussion Group 10/28/19
201 Broad St, One Canterbury Green
Stamford, CT 06901
United States of America
Join your fellow Forum members for an informal discussion of a global issue every month. The purpose is to socialize and discuss critical issues of the day. Beer, wine, hot food and a light dessert will be available beginning at 5:30 pm. The discussion will begin promptly at 6 pm and conclude at 7 pm. Further socializing continues until 7:30 pm. As always, the discussion is a ‘no homework’ event, an opportunity for WAF members to share our common interest in world affairs.
Has Sovereignty Run Its Course?
Since the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, the idea of sovereignty, of a generally recognized exclusive right of rulers in their jurisdictions. has formed the norm and the defined the basic unit of international relations. Is that going to be true in the future? Recent decades' developments, urgent new issues, and perhaps new modes of thought, raise questions beyond theoretical speculation.
In a variation from Monday discussions' normal format, WAF Board Member Derek Harvey will open the discussion with a short presentation outlining the specific factors that may be undermining the idea of sovereignty today, and will onnect the dots into our overarching question.
As always this is a 'no homework' event; as always some relevant materials will be assembled and forwarded to registrants. Above all, and particularly for such a forward-looking topic, all are encouraged to come prepared to share their thoughts, hear each others', an perhaps explore what we need for government in the dawning new age.
